Dream in Red and White August 27, 2008

At breakfast this morning, I remembered snippets of a dream, which I related to Tim immediately.

From my house, I walk outside. There is a bit of ivylike ground coverage (the dream has provided this—it doesn’t exist in the current reality). Over by that ground coverage, I see many cardinals, all male, all bright red. There must be thirty of them. Some are flapping and hovering low to the ground, just above the ivy; others are already on the ground. They are all having at something. I get closer, and I see that it is a white cat.

The white cat is quite dead. It’s possible, I think, that these cardinals haven’t killed it but are simply scavengers. But I know I’m kidding myself.

And I worry about how I’m going to break the news to my neighbor.

Well, that’s kind of gripping…

“… having at something …” I think I know what it means, but it’s an interesting ‘merkin phrase

Hmm, what did you have for dinner last night?

Do you like your neighbor?

M: And I thought that expression had British origins, but now I’m not so sure.

CW: A Flaming Red’s pizza crust (my staple) topped with spinach, goat cheese, salmon, and a little radicchio. And a glass of white wine.

She She: Actually, I adore my neighbors who have the three white cats. But I don’t adore the white cats stalking cardinals et al. at my bird feeder.

I think it’s a deeply religious, prophetic dream. The ivy represents a venerated institution. The thirty cardinals clearly represent the College of Cardinals that elects the pope. And the dead white cat is Pope Benedict XVI (a.k.a. Joseph Ratzinger—get it? Cat=Rat…).

If the pope suddenly dies, I think your dream is telling us that it will be a conspiracy.

But when did you become a Catholic?

Poor Gunther. I’ve noticed him out there more than usual this week. This dream is your revenge.

I like my little purple symbol. How did it get there?

Seems I can customize my own, a la Craig & Cedar Waxwing, but I think WordPress has done a mighty fine job in selecting one for me.

Craig: I knew I could count on the Dream Master for a logical interpretation.

Lynda: I always wonder if it’s Gunther or one of the other two (how would I ever know?). Thing is, I actually love cats. I just don’t appreciate them attacking the birds (which is, of course, their nature). Definitely a revenge dream…on behalf of my endangered cardinal couple!

As for the symbols, WordPress added them recently. I like them too! Very tasteful.

If one of the cardinals gets done it let me know and I’ll send you the one that’s been loitering in my neighbourhood: it is the noisiest thing I’ve ever heard.

Is that as in ‘Have at thee, thou varlet?’ How chivalric, and a white cat? Like something out of ‘The Matter of Britain’. I have to confess that as soon as anyone says the word “I had this dream’ I fall into a deep deep sleep: I know that’s awful, but there you go……

By the way check out Tales from Homeward today: very funny.

Craig: we can only hope it’s soon in coming.

Betty: I did so enjoy Tales from Homeward. To witness you and Uncle converse is divine! I hope someday to really dig into that blog…
