Yesterday, Tim and I got a Christmas tree. Our first one in four years. We are staying home for the holidays, the gods willing!

It is balsam, because balsam reminds me of hiking in the mountains, that moment when you’re breathing into your effort and suddenly, in a cool inhaled rush of higher-altitude air at the back of your throat, there is this also this fragrance, this glorious smell of the north woods that is balsam.

We stood it up in the living room. Its top is just shy of the ceiling. We draped it in white lights.

I am keeping it watered.

Soon we will decorate.

Oooh, I want to smell it.

I had to Google it – but Google can’t do scent. I hope they’re working on it.
