The Vision/The Reality April 23, 2008

When I headed off to Portland April 6, I envisioned working hard copyediting a Big Book and finding time to catch up on all sorts of things, like this blog.
When I got to Portland, the reality was that I had to work all day in order to meet the deadline, and once Tim got back to the room the energy would shift to food or entertainment or falling into an exhausted heap.
When I got home on April 19, I envisioned quickly catching up with everything—laundry, the mail, bill paying, blogs—within a couple of days. The reality is that I still have not caught up.
When I left, I envisioned a changed landscape upon my return. That has been true, with unseasonable temperatures in the 80s (F) and no more patches of snow. I slept with the windows open on Saturday night to hear the distant peepers and awoke to robins (the loudest) and many other birds. Tim heard a barred owl. I am the usual Owl Hearer, but that one failed to wake me from my back-in-my-own-bed slumber.

I know how that goes — the vision is often more optimistic than the reality. I’m not caught up from Illinois either.
Is one ever caught up from Illinois?
Here it is spring like it’s never been spring before. I can’t soak up enough sun. Mourning doves and what chew birdie birdie birdie.
It’s crazy, this not catching up. B, sounds like a song sparrow.
mm dropped by the other day with some good advice about what to do when you have a backlog, but I’ve already forgotten what it was. I remember the first step was to publicly announce “I declare a backlog” but I can’t remember what comes after that.
Life is tough, especially this never-catching-up business. I’ve pretty much given up trying; my best shot nowadays is to finish those few items that are truly essential, and hope that the less important ones don’t wreak too much havoc when they sit there, unattended to.
I’m just glad you’re back …
I swear I’m not caught up since travelling late last year
I declare a backlog.
I did make some pile progress yesterday.
But how do you backlog people continue to post? I used to be able to do it. I’m finding it harder and harder.
That said, Sewa, you better start writing again.
