Heat Advisory July 6, 2010

We’re to have a week of 90-degree (F) temperatures here on Route 153. Checking the weather online just now, I see there is a heat advisory today from 10 am to 8 pm.
I will need to work out before 10 am.
Paul starts our annual house painting today, and he warned me two days ago that he’d be working half days only. He should be here any minute to get started and get out before the worst of it. In fact, I hear the banging of car door and ladder now.
Already, for several nights, we have turned on the window-unit AC in our bedroom. Last year we didn’t even bother to install the window units. The second one is in my office, and I suspect today will be the first it’s been used in two years.
Other signs of summer? My summerfriend Sioux has arrived, no longer teaching, down the road for me to envy most minutes, but also to join at the swimming hole when I need a summerbreak.
And our favorite circus is back Thursday, arriving again in the drippiest, thickest heat of the summer. Maybe we’ll get to go and sit under the hot tent, sweat through our cotton clothes, sip water or flavored ices, and see acrobats sweat too but somehow never slip.

I was out watering this morning before 9 and almost passed out. It’s deadly out there. Y’all be careful now!
We’ve been above 90 6 days out of 7 since Memorial Day. It’s a killer summer here (last year was too chilly to go to the pool the whole month of July). So I could wave my hand dismissively and say “bah” or I could remember your winters and be quiet…

Hey, I made it til 2 pm before I turned on the AC.
It was supposed to get to 102°F today. It may have. It is 99°F now.
If the degree signs don’t show up and only the code does. Sorry. Ampersand-deg-semi-colon is supposed to do it. If so. Yay.
10 deg C here today. That’s our high. Grey skies, and rain. Heater on – I don’t care about the power /gas bills. Even so, the thought of a week in those temperatures makes me appreciate the cold.
Thank goodness for swimming holes. And I don’t want to rain on your circus, but I feel so awful for the animals that are made to perform under those conditions.
Oh Helen, I have some of the same issues there (despite the fact that I go…).
The term “swimming hole” fills me nostalgia like nothing else. You’re so lucky city-folk never bought up the property around your swimming hole and cut off access in 1982. Please send me directions.
Maureen: Directions: Call me. Someone did in fact buy up this swimming hole and cut off access in the 1990s. Someone who ended up being one of my best friends, so I’m very, very lucky.
Private property issues are so difficult. I hate the idea of cutting off access to a place many people grew up going to. I hate the idea of beauty belonging only to the person who owns it. On the other hand, I understand a person’s need to post their property in this ridiculously litigious age. And, of course, when my friend bought the property, it was in part to enjoy her own private spot on the water.
So, come visit. We’ll go hang by the hole.
